SONY Metal-XR 50 compact cassette tape

This SONY Metal-XR 50 (C-50MTLXRC) compact cassette was made in Italy. We categorize this Type IV tape in the Entry-Level, LCC-Category #12.

In the Tape-Meditation video you can see, that unwrapping was quite a challenge! On the other hand, this is also a good thing, keeping the tape itself safe from moisture after all those years. Let’s have a look at the curve:

Very even frequency response for this Entry-Level compact cassette made in Italy even without auto-bias setting. Since the curve did split in the high frequencies, we did an auto-bias measurement but did not change much in this case.

A note about our measurements

We do not aim for super scientific measurement. We want to provide a visual representation of the overall tape feedback of the compact cassette. For more scientific data there are many great people out there, for example the blog of audiochrome.

Finally it’s all about the tape enchantment. How does it sound? Well, with analogue tape, hardware, equipment, microphones, there is A LOT going on “in the wires” – saturation, overtones, compression, electricity, resistance and maybe quantum physics. Like Takashi once said, we could talk about this for hours. Reminds me of wine or chocolate. Its not explainable via words, you have to taste it (not the tape…)! That is why we include a 44,1kHz, 24-bit aif file of an original ZEN-MEN track and a version enchanted via the SONY Metal-XR 50 compact cassette tape.
