Japanese company Taiyo Yuden manufactured the famous That’s MR-X 60 PRO (MR-X60PRO) compact cassette starting in the 1980s. We placed this great Type IV tape in our LCC category #14, which is the “Upper Class”. In addition, we agree, that it has an “excellent dynamic performance”, “low distortion and an ultra linear frequency response”. It makes sense, that Taiyo Yuden made it for “professional use”.
Its packaging was still super perfect, basically like a new stock compact cassette tape. In other words, it was really a joy unwrapping it which you can see for yourself in the Tape-Meditation #3 video. Now lets have a look at the frequency response curve…
The curve: That’s MR-X PRO compact cassette
Therefore you now understand, what an “ultra linear frequency response” even with no adjustments means. After that, we used auto-bias and it changed the curve only a little. In addition, the second measurement with auto-bias (m.2) made it even more linear. Please keep in mind, what we already wrote about our measurements/ visual representations here.
Now we made it to the “moment of truth”, listen for yourself to the original ZEN-MEN version and the enchanted That’s MR-X PRO compact cassette version. Above all, the tape easily handled +6dB with low distortion and the dynamics are really outstanding. Oh we love Type IV tape sound 😀
